Actun Tunichil Muknal, commonly known as the ATM Cave, is a significant Maya archaeological site and a world-class cave exploration experience in the Cayo District. The name translates to 'Cave of the Stone Sepulchre.' The cave system is located within the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and was used as a sacred site by the ancient Maya for ceremonial purposes, including sacrifices. The cave is accessed by a river crossing and a jungle hike, followed by a wet cave exploration involving swimming, wading, and climbing. The highlights of the ATM Cave include numerous ancient Maya artifacts, such as pottery and ceramics, that remain in their original positions. Most notably, the cave contains several human skeletons, including the famous 'Crystal Maiden,' whose bones have been calcified over time, sparkling in the light.
