This big bull elk was relaxing in the warm sun on a beautiful day in early fall on the prairies of south east Alberta, Canada. These large mammals were a plains animal when the pioneers first came to western Canada, hunting for meat and farming and ranch fences pushed them into the mountains and foothills where most of them are now found. They were brought back to the prairies by Canadian wildlife and released on the Suffield military training block after the wild horses were removed to keep the grass in check, and since have spread out all around the training range.
