The burning of Falmouth (now Portland, Maine). Commemorate what led up to the Declaration of Indepenence 250 years ago! On Oct. 18, 1775, Captain Mowatt of the British Ship Canceaux was ordered by British Admiral Graves to bombard Falmouth (now Portland), and burn the town to ashes. It is estimated that nearly 140 homes and 280 other buildings were burned to the ground in the devastating attack. The town, including ships in the harbor, was destroyed and four other ships were captured by the British. However, this was unable to end Patriot resistance in the area.
