Caracol is one of the largest and most significant ancient Maya sites in Belize, hidden deep within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve in the Cayo District. It was once a powerful city-state that rivaled Tikal in Guatemala, covering an area of over 200 square kilometers and having a population of over 100,000. Caracol is known for its massive monumental structures, extensive network of ancient causeways, and numerous stelae and altars. The center of Caracol is dominated by the monumental structure known as Caana, or 'Sky Place,' which rises over 140 feet (43 meters) high and remains one of the tallest buildings in Belize. Reaching Caracol is an adventure in itself, often requiring a 4x4 vehicle due to its remote jungle location. The site offers a glimpse into the immense power and architectural sophistication of the ancient Maya civilization, set against a backdrop of remote and pristine tropical rainforest.
