Bonaire, one of the Dutch Caribbean’s “ABC Islands,” is a sanctuary for wildlife—especially the elegant and unmistakable Caribbean flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber). The island's salt flats and shallow lagoons provide an ideal habitat for these iconic pink birds, which feed on brine shrimp and algae-rich waters that help give them their vibrant coloration. Flamingos are most commonly spotted in the southern part of the island near the Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary, one of only four breeding grounds in the world for this species.
