The broad-headed skink is a species of lizard found only in the southeastern United States. Even though they typically forage on the ground during the day, they often shelter and sleep in live oak trees. Broad-headed skinks eat a variety of small terrestrial invertebrates, including insects, slugs, and spiders. Some will also eat larger animals, including other lizards! Like many lizards, broad-headed skinks can autotomize their tails, letting them break off when attacked, as this one has done.
