The artist had previously depicted himself as a nurse and painter in the studio. Now he presented himself as an elegant dandy in a tuxedo at the counter of a nightclub. In doing so, he drew on a traditional motif. Depictions of merry drinkers or revelers were particularly popular in 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painting. But Beckmann's portrayal does not convey the impression of exuberant merriment. Its head resembles a skull, its skin is greenish, its eyes shimmer in red and yellow tones. Convulsively contorted, his figure fits into the narrow pictorial space.
