For over a decade — through British sweeps, colonial detention camps, and Operation Anvil — Field Marshal Musa Mwariama held his ground in the forests of Mount Kenya and the Nyambene Hills, commanding nearly 2,000 fighters in one of history's most unsung anti-colonial insurgencies. Born M'Kirigua M'Muchiri in Meru County in 1928, Mwariama earned his name — meaning "the one who speaks the truth" — while fighting with the Kenya Land and Freedom Army (KLFA), known to the world as the Mau Mau. He rose to the highest rank of Field Marshal and, after Dedan Kimathi's capture in 1956, became the last standing commander of the forest resistance. On 12 December 1963 — Kenya's Independence Day — he emerged from the forest and was personally received by Prime Minister Jomo Kenyatta at Ruringu Stadium.
