Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, often called the “Porkies,” is Michigan’s largest state park, covering nearly 60,000 acres in the Upper Peninsula along the shore of Lake Superior. Its landscape includes old-growth northern hardwood forest, rugged hills, inland lakes, waterfalls, and more than 90 miles of hiking trails. Scenic highlights include the Lake of the Clouds overlook, the Escarpment Trail, and miles of unspoiled Lake Superior shoreline. The park is a haven for outdoor recreation year-round. In summer and fall, visitors hike, backpack, fish, and camp in remote backcountry or rustic cabins. Winter brings opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and downhill skiing at the Porkies Ski Area. Wildlife such as black bears, moose, and bald eagles roam the park, and its large tracts of virgin forest make it one of the best places in the Midwest to experience true wilderness.
