Longyearbyen, the main settlement of Svalbard, is the world’s northernmost town with a permanent population, located at 78° north latitude—just about 1,300 kilometers from the North Pole. Originally founded as a coal mining town in 1906, Longyearbyen has transformed into a unique Arctic community that serves as the cultural, logistical, and tourism hub of the archipelago. Despite its extreme location, the town is surprisingly vibrant, with colorful buildings standing out against the stark Arctic landscape of mountains, tundra, and glaciers.
