Specialty Mug ボーンチャイナマグカップ
The Kavi Darbar motif on your morning mug of tea.
This motif is from a pillar in the Kavi Darbar in the Gurudwara Paonta Sahib. The floral motif was set into the marble pillar through inlay work.
The Gurudwara was built in the memory of the tenth and last Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh ji. Kavi Darbar translates literally to “Poets’ Court,” and was a gathering hall where poets engaged in poetry recitations. Guru Gobind Singh ji was famous for his love of poetry. As per Sikh tradition, every month on a full moon night, he used to arrange such the gathering of poets in a court on the banks of the River Yamuna.
Inlay mosaics in Gurdwaras were influenced by Mughal work imported from Iran and are similar to the inlays set into the marble of the Taj Mahal
To recreate this motif, I first hand sketched the left side, and then traced over each stem and branch onto the right side to build the whole design. I then transferred the sketch onto thicker paper and applied water colors. The dull gold accents are acrylic. The entire painting was then digitally printed onto this mug
