St. Agnes of Rome, faithful to her religion, spurned the romantic advances of the son of a local pagan official and remained steadfast in her Christianity to the point of death. She is patroness of purity, gardeners, engaged couples, crops, the Girl Scouts, and Children of Mary. She is shown in art with a lamb, a Latin pun (agnus) on her name.
