Art nouveau Letters - Monograms from the Arts & Crafts Movement This letter S is a lovely rugged monogram created in 1901, and published in a set of books. The monogram S is surrounded by a wonderful hand-drawn vine pattern, very much in the style of the art nouveau patterns in style at the time, which was characterized by stylized and flowing designs, often with flowing florals. This letter S monogram is also an arts and crafts style- which was very much aligned with the art nouveau period. The Arts and Crafts style was a search for design that was beautiful, and in reaction against machine-production. Thus, the monogram S in our design, an arts and crafts inspired monogram, is simple, rugged, and a purposeful rough-hewn quality, an almost medieval quality, as if it were printed with a hand-made woodcut.
