Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Leutze, 1851 Emanuel Leutze painted this memorable painting of Washington crossing the Delaware in 1851, in memory of America's first president George Washington's surprise attack on the Hessians, just north of Trenton, on December 26, 1776 during the American Revolutionary war. The George Washington painting is very patriotic, as it shows Washington standing on the boat, and his men paddling through the ice-covered river, and the American flag - with it's stars and stripes is blowing in the fierce winter wind. It is the quintessential painting that celebrates American independence.
