A beautiful poinsettia says Christmas. There are 100 varieties of poinsettias. Poinsettias are available in red, pink, white, yellow, salmon, purple and multi-colors. The top selling potted plant in the United States and Canada is the poinsettia. Joel Robert Poinsett introduced the poinsettia to the United States from Mexico. In Mexico, poinsettias are a perennial shrub that grows 10 - 15 feet tall. Astecs once used the bracts for a reddish purple fabric dye and used the sap to control fevers. December 12th is Poinsettia Day marking the death of Joel Robert Poinsett in 1851.
