Nubian Queens is a term used to describe the powerful female rulers of the ancient Kingdom of Kush, which flourished between approximately 1070 BCE and 350 CE in what is now modern-day Sudan.The so-called Kandakes or Candaces were the title of the queens of Kush, and they often ruled the country, exhibiting military and political leadership.During the reign of Augustus, Queen Amanirenas led a successful military campaign against the Roman Empire, which was a clear indication of the Nubian state’s sovereignty.In addition to the political aspect of their power, the queens’ ruling was closely intertwined with the religious hierarchy of the state.The Nubian queens’ legacy is not only engraved in the pyramids of Meroë but also resonates in the discourse about women’s roles throughout history, providing a critical perspective on the potential impact of female leaderships.
