Less well known by the general public than his contemporary and fellow martyr St. Thomas More with whom he shares a feast day, St. John Fisher (1469-1535) was, perhaps, the most renowned English theologian of his day. He was executed by Henry VIII for refusing to sanction the King's divorce of Catherine of Aragon and his taking the title "Supreme Head of the Church of England".
