The Franz Marc Collection

Franz Marc (1880-1916) was a german painter and printmaker. He had a great affinity for nature and animals and his work reflects this. One of the forefathers of German Expressionism his style was vivid and colorful, abstract, cubist and futurist and he produced a number of woodcuts. He was a founder member of the journal Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). Coscripted into the German army at the start of WW1 he was killed by shrapnel in 1916 whilst waiting for demob when the German army decided to recall all artists of proven ability. His work was denounced by the Nazis as degenerate and although much survived, a lot was destroyed, This collection houses tee-shirts, jigsaw puzzles, women's leggings, ceramic tiles, wood wall art, coffee mugs, posters and notebooks.
