The soul of the rose by John William Waterhouse
John William Waterhouse (British 1849–1917) took inspiration both from Classical and Pre-Raphaelite painting. As with several of Waterhouse's other works, The soul of the rose (1908) is thought to be inspired by a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. The poem is called 'Come into the Garden, Maud' and tells the story of a woman and her thoughts of her lost love.
