White Dove in a Gold Medallion
White dove in a gold medallion, illustration on fol. 3r of J. Paul Getty Museum, Ms. Ludwig XV 3. The manuscript was written in Flanders (now Northern France) in about 1270. A white dove in the middle ages was a symbol of John the Baptist, and represented the cleansing of baptism.
