Clothing is always a fashion statement, but it is also a recognition of greater gender equality. In the past, there was much more separation between gender roles and stereotypes. Fashion reinforced those stereotypes. Society expected women to get married, please their husbands, have children and stay home bound. There were few professional opportunities for women. As women proved they were as capable as men in professional fields, their fashions followed. Today, women feel feminine clothing is impractical, and gives the wrong message about gender equality and inclusivity. I do not believe that girls are trying to be confused with boys. They still try to be attractive, and do want the love and attention of boys. They have just become so unaccustomed to slips, girdles, nylon stockings, petticoats, and other feminine clothing, that they no longer feel right.
