The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity working to raise awareness, encourage early detection and to fund research of esophageal cancer in hopes of a cure.™ The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation was established in Rhode Island in 2011. Since inception, the organization has spread national and international awareness of the dangerous risk factors associated with esophageal cancer, which include but is not limited to: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD, acid reflux; common symptom and heartburn and/or indigestion). The foundation also advocates for esophageal health and the prevention of esophageal cancer. While there are currently no routine or standard screening/diagnostic tests to detect esophageal cancer, the foundation strongly believes in advocacy for the earliest possible detection of esophageal cancer and encourages the public to become aware of risk factors and symptoms associated with esophageal cancer so they may be proactive about their health and to work with their doctors to reduce incidence of esophageal cancer and improve survival. In 2015, The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation issued research funding for esophageal cancer for the very first time. The foundation worked diligently to raise funding, as esophageal cancer research is critically underfunded both by the government and other groups. As a grassroots nonprofit, The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation relies on the generosity of its donors and supporters to raise funds to support this mission.
