LlamaBerry aims to build connection and inspire positive change. It began during the COVID-19 shutdown, when visits with family and friends came to an abrupt halt. Video calls filled the void, but a piece was missing. Our typical visiting time involves sharing stories and catching up over board games, during hikes together, and while cooking together. Conversation is a part of our world, but it's usually combined with shared experiences. To recreate a shared experience, we tried holding a virtual game night. We balanced a webcam on a stack of books over a board game on the kitchen table. Family members calling in described the game pieces they'd like to move when it was their turn. It was clunky. The conversation focused on game logistics, adjusting the webcam, and identifying cards that were hard to see in the glare. Something that we usually enjoyed suddenly seemed complicated. We decided to create our own online board game. The goal was to create a fun, simple online game that didn't require installing software. We already owned the domain name LlamaBerry.com from a few years earlier, when we had purchased it on a whim as we joked about starting a berry farm with llamas. The LlamaBerry vision now came to life in the form of a game. The game soon became a family project, with weekly game nights and an ever-changing set of rules as everyone shared ideas. We began connecting with friends over LlamaBerry as well, and soon realized we'd like to share it with others. Our hope is that the LlamaBerry game will help bring more people together. The LlamaBerry store features products inspired by the game characters. 10% of our royalties are donated through our Llamas for Change campaign. Llamas for Change benefits the National Urban League (a civil rights organization) and The League of Women Voters.
