I was forced to take a graphic design course in high school when there were no space left for the phys. ed. class. Apparently I was good, because my first project was graded at a 98% (I lost the 2% because of my designer's statement), and ended the year with the highest mark in the class. From there I started designing posters for various events around Canada, such as the Diaspora Conference, and took commissions to create logos and graphics for websites (I designed the logo for www.captionsearch.com).
