I got tricked into being an artist by my science teacher, who had me create a book on tree identification. I got hooked on botanical illustration and taxonomy, which is the art of identifying things in nature. I also studied figure drawing in college. The human form is for the most challenging and rewarding things that I’ve ever done. I have a deep of appreciation of great artists and sometimes I do works that are derivative of others, like Georgia O’Keeffe, Van Gogh, Maxfeild Parrish and Klimt. At some point I got into liquid painting, and I use that modality as my first coat of paint on a canvas. Then I improvise from there, using the images that the paint implies and flushing it out from there to a full painting. I figure, why not let the paint do the work? Now I have all the fun.
