Back in 1976, when my fiancé and I sat down with our Wedding Planner (my mother), she asked us about what colors and styles we wanted as a theme for our Big Day. Without hesitation, we both replied "Black & White" and "Art Deco". Mom looked at us with a completely blank face that then turned to horror! Despite being a sophisticated Art Collector herself, she had no idea at all what "Art Deco" was! (In Mom's defense, while that term was originally coined in 1925 by architect Le Corbusier, it really had not come into popular use until 1968 when historian Bevis Hiller published his book "Art Deco of the '20s and '30s). What had produced Mom's horror was our choice of colors, as it was pretty much unheard of in those days to have black as a prominent color for a wedding. With a lot of research and much difficulty, Mom finally managed to pull it off and our March 5, 1977 wedding turned out to be a perfectly elegant event. When I began creating artwork to be used on consumer products, I looked at the market for Wedding invitations, postage, favors, & other related essentials and niceties, and decided to open a Wedding Store that carried designs that would appeal to what I believe to be an under-served niche. This included not only same-sex weddings but also for creative couples looking for something stylistically unique and decidedly non-traditional. My store, TheMarryingType, is still young and I am continually working to expand the range of styles.
