Yūrei and yōkai (ghosts & monsters) appear in many of Japan's most famous stories, including kabuki dramas, and have been recorded since 9th century. But their popularity exploded in the era of Ukiyo-e prints (17-19th centuries). Yūrei are spirits of the deceased, similar to Western ghosts, while yōkai are earthly creatures more akin to goblins. The yūrei are often depicted as pale-faced spirits with messy black hair, white burial kimono, and no feet. Yōkai can take many forms, including animals, humans, goblins, or inanimate objects.
